Yesterday I reviewed “The Sound of Music” and while I enjoyed writing the review, sorry it was so long, I felt it was incomplete. Not that long ago Carrie Underwood reprised the role of Maria and critics ripped her apart, but Lady Gaga steps up to the plate to do a medley and everyone loves it.
I’d like to state that I am not a big fan of either Carrie or Gaga. Just want to make it clear, that while I do like some of their songs (Gaga’s I prefer sung by other people) I would rather listen to others over them. Julie Andrews on the other hand, is a timeless classic and right up there with Barbara Streisand. You just don’t attempt one of their songs, unless you have extraordinary vocal ability.
If I had to pick between the two, I would have to go with Underwood simply based on I like her voice better. I find it more palpable than Gaga. However, it seems that Gaga is more popular right now than Carrie, so of course the critics are going to remark as they did. I can’t help thinking that if Carrie was more popular than Gaga the roles would be reversed.
Out of the three, who sang it better? The answer will always be Julie Andrews. There is a reason the musical has survived 50 years and will survive another 50. That’s just my two cents.
