Ó Raghallaigh

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Instead of going with the obvious stories of Leprechans and green beer, I’m going to give a bit of background of my mom’s side of the family.

The Riley family line started in Cavan County, Ireland. Over time the spelling has greatly changed from O’ Raghallaigh to O’Reilly, O’Riley, Riley and a few others in between. There are even Riley’s over in Scotland who long ago would run the border as thieves (at least that is what my grandfather says).

Coat of arms motto: “With fortitude and prudence.”

Interesting fact:

 – Increasingly becoming a popular first name in the US.

– The O’Reillys were the most powerful sept of the old Gaelic kingdom of Breffny (Cavan and the surrounding counties), and the family is still prominent in the area.
