What I heard in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner


Dedicated to Nahid Ahsan and all the English Teachers around the world

How wrong we are to think
that God made humankind alone
in His own image, beautiful
and divine! He made all the species known
to have lived on this world,
living now or ever will as His own!

Perhaps He does love one,
a little more than the rest
but it is a love surpassing
all we think or as love may cast –
a love that renders not
the Lover to be less equal
or unfair and the beloved’s ways
of life burdened by inexplicable chains!

There are eyes unlike ours
that I know can see and find too,
God in everything alive,
living, crawling, slithering or inert,
for I have met them through their words
that say what now I so lamely speak!

Through their eyes I have seen,
the forgiving nature of dogs
when pledging…
