Fuller House Flip or Flop?

Season 2 was just released a couple of days ago and everybody has been binge watching. Myself included, but as with Season 1 it is painfully obvious that the writers have no clue about the original series. Yes, this is not going to be a “happy go watch the show” post. There are so many things wrong that tick me off.

Starting with the biggest thing that irks me: Kimmy Gibbler. By the end of the original series she was bugging me because there was no character development with her then and for the most part, there still isn’t any character development. She is still the dumb best friend comic relief. There are small moments of maturity, but even those are marred by sheer dumb luck. Further perpetuating the stereotypical dumb blonde.

In contrast to prove my point about her, at the high school reunion they brought Duane back. The boyfriend who used to say “Whatever” all the time. He matured and made something of himself. Yes, Kimmy was still able to turn him into a big pile of “whatever” goo but that was because I think he still has a crush on her, or that is what we are supposed to think. In any case he went from caveman, to normal human person! Kimmy is still an idiot.

The crass, dirty jokes that are part of “aging with the original audience.” The original audience grew up with clean, family friendly jokes. Some may have been aimed at the parents, but were never so openly in the gutter. One instance that sticks out most right now is in Season 2 Episode 1. Fernando is wearing Kimmy’s robe. It is too small and right away you know he is going to bend over and his junk is going to be exposed. In the original, this would have been done with more finesse, showing him bending forward with junk away from camera. Today the junk is blocked out in full view of the audience. Oddly enough I can’t find a screen grab of the scene, but it happened.

Then, with the crass and lazy humor, there is the full on shock value of same sex kisses exchanged by hetero characters. Kimmy and Stephanie, a couple of times.

And while there have not been full out kissing between the three, but Fuller House has completely perverted the platonic relationships between Danny, Jesse and Joey. Almost every scene they are in together, the script alludes to them being together. Watching the original series, you know there was nothing like that going on. It would have been ok, but I don’t think that anyone would have even thought about it if Bob Saget hadn’t said that he took the part because he thought it was about being progressive and was “three men in a relationship raising kids.” This was revealed in the Lifetime Movie Network “documentary” about how the series got started.

Poor Becky has been turned into a baby hungry robot. I swear every other word out of her mouth has been “baby” the other word being “want.” I think the writers finally got tired of hearing it too and gave into her demand by letting her adopt a child at the end of season two. Now what are they going to do with her character? Is she going to demand another child? One of their own? Or is she going to talk Stephanie into letting her be a surrogate?

fh9

Speaking of Stephanie, Oh my God! They have turned her into a slut. Not only have we seen her go through a few on the show, it is alluded to her going through them like a diabetes in a candy store while she was working as a dj. Obviously she has been characterized as the female version of Jesse before he settled down with Becky, but really? Let’s make her a slut in order to replace the Jesse from season one of Full House.

fh5

Given her the inability to have children and paired her up with a nimrod who was invented for this part. He was never mentioned in the original series, Kimmy only had an older brother named Garth and possibly younger sisters.

fh10

Let’s not forget the numerous slight of hand jokes shoved down our throats and aimed at the Olsen Twins. We get it they didn’t want to do the show and everyone is upset. They didn’t want to do the show, get over it and move on. Their little sister at one point said she would step in for them. Let her. If not use another actress or leave Michelle where she is. Stop hounding the twins and the audience like we can do something about it.

The new kids don’t really bother me too much. Jackson can be a brat off and on, I’m waiting to pass judgement on the middle son because I think they are building up for something with him and if they lead us in the wrong direction with him, I will be pissed. The babies can’t do any wrong, they are babies. Ramona…I don’t have bad or good to say about her. She is just there. Same as the “Popco(?)” and “Lola” characters. They don’t add much but they don’t take away much either.

And is New Kids on the Block going to be replacing the reoccurring roles of the Beach Boys? If so couldn’t you have picked a better band? They kind of suck

I’m pretty sure there is more, but that’s all I can think about right now. My wine is clouding my memory. Anyone else think the new series is going down the toilet?

Secrets & Lies Rant

Maybe I’m just in a mood to rant, but if TV producers are looking for new show ideas, why not come up with your own? Secrets & Lies is a TV series that originated in Australia, and America decided to “adapt” it for Americans. So I checked it out awhile back on Netflix, the Australian version, and just couldn’t get into it. Because I couldn’t get into it, i forgot the name of the show and never put two and two together until now. Then Sunday night, I was bored and checked out the American version.

When the US decided to “adapt” this show, I was thinking that there were going to be big differences. Like take the main bases of the show and enhance everything else. Guess what? They changed a few names and moved locations….that’s it. The guy still finds his dead son (doesn’t know it’s his son), the inspector is still psychotically out to peg it on the guy. We are talking word for word ripoff! No ingenuity at all.

Obviously it’s not my cup of tea, as I couldn’t get into the original, but it ticked me off because they didn’t put in any effort to change it and really make it ours. This story line could happen anywhere, as proven with the two differences, so what makes the location of the show so special? What makes the location so unique it can only happen in America? If your not going to make a show your own, or prove to viewers why you should have made it first, why do it?

This is classic plagiarizing. If it is frowned upon in writing, why not in television? Even if the show was stripped down to the bare essitials, a guy finds a kid dead that he turns out to be related to and he is the prime suspect, everything else can be changed to make it fresh and better. It doesn’t have to be his secret son from an affair, it could be a cousin who lives in the neighborhood. It could be known they were related, which would make the fact that he is the prime suspect even more dark. The weapon of choice could be a prize baseball bat or the guy could be a Plummer and the weapon be a missing wrench. Why use a flashlight that the guy hardly ever used? I never really understood why a painter needed a flashlight to begin with. He is working inside houses with bright lights on. Change the younger daughter to a boy and try to gain some sympathy from the main character.

There is just so much that could have been done to make it better and “more American” than what was done. Rant over.

Discipline or Abuse?

A little while ago a TV show aired a miniseries about a man slapping a child. (Little clear up, I watched the Australian version.) Each episode gives a different point of view from those that were around at the time of the incident. The first episode sets the scene, it is Hector’s 40th birthday and his wife is throwing him a party with friends and family. Hector is having his own issues leading up to the infamous slap, and before he can have a nervous breakdown his cousin slaps a child that isn’t his.

This child in question is about four or five years old, single child and spoiled. His parents allow him to get away with anything and they display that through out the show. He is first in trouble for biting another child, then he breaks a video game controller. Hugo, the child, is then caught messing with CDs  and vinyl records, coating them in chocolate and chips as well as scratching them. The last incident before the slap is him being yelled at by his parents for repeatedly pulling up flowers from the roots. The mother’s response is to pick him up and breast feed him in front of the other children and Hector, who comes to sort out the arguing. The children went outside to play cricket, and the child has the bat/paddle thing. Playing by the rules, he was out and didn’t want to give up the bat. He starts swinging it around aiming for the surrounding kids, and that is when the cousin stepped in, took the bat and smacked him across the face.

His father is an argumentative sort, who finds problems with everyone and all of their choices. Obviously he really flies off the handle when his child is hit, especially when it was by a man he had been having a heated argument just seconds before.

First off I do not have children, but helped raise three sisters and grew up surrounded by little cousins as the oldest in the group. Secondly, I do not support child abuse, but I do believe in spankings. I want that clear.

I can understand where the cousin was coming from. Someone should have taken the child to task before it got that out of hand. Hugo was attacking his child and the other children with a bat, had no one stepped in someone was going to get hurt. Then the kid would have hurt someone and gotten away with it.

While I feel that action needed to taken, the approach was wrong. Children need discipline and to be taught right from wrong. Sitting in a chair and yelling at a child who obviously never listens, is not going to work. Babying him when he is so clearly in the wrong is detrimental to his social development. He is going to grow up feeling entitled and used to everyone giving him whatever he wants on a silver platter.

It drives me insane when children are not taught any manners, but to go around doing things they are not supposed to be doing is worse. It also shows the other children rebellion. If that kid doesn’t have to listen to his parents why do I? With unruly children, people wonder why the world is going psycho.

Reprimanding a child for wrong doing is completely fine, but slapping the child was wrong for different reasons. One you don’t slap a child, they need a spanking, time out or some sort of action that makes them realize they are doing wrong. Secondly it was not the cousins place to do it. The parents should have stepped in and done something. And I don’t mean breastfeeding, the kid was too old for that anyway, or separating him from the other children with the promise of explaining why he was wrong later. Discipline should be done in the moment so the child fully understands what he did wrong.

Am I wrong in thinking this? It seems like parents no longer care about their children or how they turn out. Then when the kids are all grown up, everyone expects them to act right, but how can they when they were never taught how? At the very least, if I did half the crap that kid did, I would have gotten a stern talking to and put in time out. That’s the least, at most I would have been spanked, told to say sorry and put in my room or some room alone to think about my actions.

I know I’m not the best example, but seriously people need to take control of their kids or not get upset when others do it for them.

New Hat

So it may seem that my blog and life are undergoing changes, as I find new things that I want to do. I’m still trying to figure out where my life is headed, which at 25 is a bit late in the game for me. I tend to procrastinate.

My blog is new, and I’m new to blogging so I expected to make changes as I go along. Which is why I named it Books and More, I knew I wanted to do book reviews, but I didn’t want to limit it to just that. I honestly thought I would have more on here about Doctor Who, Sherlock (TV series) or one of the other many fandoms I have been a part of.

While I’m in the midst of changing, starting a new school and adding different aspects to my blog, I’m also thinking about starting a little side business. I have been collaborating with an author to edit her next book. If she is happy with my work, maybe I could turn that into something. I know I probably wouldn’t get rich off of it, but I could make enough to be happy. Doesn’t take much Lol.

In my mind, I like to think that I don’t have over 110 followers for nothing and that they enjoy most of what I write. I would like to ensure them that I’m still going to be here posting and it should be pretty consistent context. I just hope the changes aren’t so drastic that y’all decided to unfollow me.
